How To Build Your Wedding Flat Lay Styling Kit
Wherever you fall in the wedding pro sphere, a basic flat lay styling kit is a must have.
Wedding photographers crafted these first, but I believe everyone from planners to florists to stationers can make use of these! They’re essential to keep your Instagram feed and portfolio fresh. Large or small, your flat lay kit is sure to come in handy for wedding days or around the office or studio.
As a wedding planner, having my own kit is essential for inspiration shoots and wedding days, to take my own photos and even when I’m working with wedding photographers.
You can spend a pretty penny to build a beautiful styling kit, but there are some really simple must haves to start you off inexpensively. Then build on it bit by bit with new investment pieces.
Here are a few key pieces to start your wedding flat lay styling kit:
Styling Blocks
You’ll want a mixture of sizes and thicknesses to raise details up and add dimension to photos. While acrylic styling blocks look slick in your kit, they’re expensive to build up a good supply that can style a five piece stationery suite.
Start simple with wooden blocks from the craft store first. You’ll need a mix of cubes and square pieces in different sizes.
Postage Stamps
Some pretty postage stamps are a must have when styling stationery suites, or adding a little colour. Etsy is a great source. You can find my fave Canadian shop right here.
Look for subject matter that fits with weddings and a variety of colours to match different looks.
Backdrops
A few white foam core boards from the dollar store are helpful for directing light and also to create a flat surface for styling. Start your kit with linen, velvet, or chiffon from a fabric store in different colours. You’ll only need a yard or two of each. Wrapping paper or Color-Aid sheets also make for simple backdrops.
When you’re ready to splurge, Locust Collection or Dekora have some really beautiful styling mats and boards available.
Ring Boxes & Dishes
I have some air dry modelling clay that I’ve been meaning to fashion a little ring dish. If you’re not confident in your DIY skills, Locus also has beautiful ring dishes in their shop.
Keep an eye out for vintage ring boxes when you’re thrifting. If you love the look of velvet ring boxes, a good tip is to pick them up during sales. You get what you pay for. Amazon cheapies will usually disappoint. My fave sources are The Mrs. Box and Canadian shop Velvet from jeweler Stor By Margot.
Ribbon Scraps
Try your local craft store or dollar store to start you off. Then save bits and pieces from wedding days or check with your florist friend for scraps. When you’re ready to spend a little more, look out for silk ribbon styling kits.
Faux Engagement Rings
On wedding day, your clients’ rings will be handy for flat lay shooting, but it doesn’t hurt to have a faux engagement ring or two in your kit. Check out your local Walmart jewelry section if you’re in a rush, or Amazon options will typically take longer to ship.
Fresh Flowers & Greenery
Particularly for weddings and shoot days, you’ll want to collaborate with the florist to have extra blooms on hand to add to your flat lays. Use the full pieces or break up for petals to sprinkle around.
