How To Choose A Wedding Business Coach Or Mentor
So, you're tired of the free webinars —wasting an hour listening for tiny nuggets of useful strategy— and you’ve downloaded every freebie template/guide/checklist you can get your hands on.
Let’s be honest, it’s not moving the needle and getting you the clients you really want, is it?
You’ve learned that you get what you pay for and you're ready to invest in real help to grow your wedding business.
Options for online education and coaching are popping up everywhere. The #weducation market is as crowded as our wedding industry, right?
Don't pull out your credit card too quickly, just because the price is right and the sales page is slick. You've got some digging to do.
Here are 8 questions to ask before you invest in wedding business education or coaching:
What do you actually want help with?
Has this "expert" done the work themselves?
Have they worked on real weddings, with the portfolio to show for it?
Have they managed the day-to-day headaches of building a successful wedding business, getting to full time, and gaining the respect of clients and colleagues?
Do they have the stats, results, reviews, and social proof to back it up?
Have they been where you are and built a wedding business and a brand that you admire?
Have they invested in their own education and certifications, both in business building and industry-specific skills?
Are they where you want to be?
Is procrastination your biggest issue?
You know what you should be doing, but you’re lacking motivation to get started. Or you’re lacking focus to stay on task. Maybe an accountability coach is the answer. They’re going to provide support and guidance but most importantly, they’ll keep you on task and light a fire so you’ll stop dragging your ass and procrastinating on the work that will really boost your numbers. There might be a little tough love involved. Ask them about their approach and know yourself, what style will you respond best to.
Are you looking for help with overall strategy and business building insight?
Would you benefit from one or a few sessions, or a longer program? A consulting business coach —like me— offers strategy, insight and tools during private one-on-one sessions filled with insight, or group coaching, to help you build your business. They can help with specific pain points, like how to price your services, sales coaching, or broader help like getting you ready to launch or revamp your business entirely.
Is mindset your issue?
Confidence and negativity can be a huge roadblock. I'm no expert, and NLP is not my jam, but maybe that's your ticket. (A "manifest that shit" sticker is about as woo woo as I get.) A mindset coach will help you discover your own roadblocks and set you up with tools for success to shift your negative self-talk.
Think about what you're struggling with the most.
Is there a course rather than a coach or more expensive program to help? Look in to education on that topic specifically, or find the expert specific to that field. A course might be your best fit, rather than ongoing coaching. Perhaps all you need is a little help with SEO or defining your Ideal Client, not a complete audit of your business.
Anyone can look like an "expert" with the right branding and marketing know-how. Doing one thing well does not equate to an overall business strategy expert. Hell, anyone call call themselves an expert and offer to coach or teach anytime they like. If you’re looking for help overall, make sure that you’re choosing a coach to work with who excels in the area you could use the most help. Is that marketing, sharpening design skills, or overall business strategy?
Ask yourself the hard questions. Find someone you connect with, and who aligns with your values. It's okay if it's not me. But please spend your hard-earned money wisely.
